The holidaymakers at Jonalaukis are exposed to sunny weather as much as those in Palanga, i.e. 86 kcal/cm².  According to climatologists the area gets 1707 hours of sunshine and average yearly precipitation is 688mm. Various written sources indicate different recorded lowest and highest temperatures which range between -30C to +30C degrees.

 

The District is the furthest from the sea, therefore it is more under the influence of continental climate. Ignalina District is mid-way between West European maritime and East European Continental climate. This climatic zone is therefore called maritime-continental. For this reason when there are 20 degrees above zero on the coast, the temperature here rises up to +24C degrees. Winters are colder here ( which is especially attractive to those enjoying ice fishing and skiing), winds are more moderate though quite more varied than in other parts of the country and the relative humidity is lower than in other parts. The larger part of rainfall is made up of snow even up to 40-50 cm thick (15 cm on the coast). Spring is never too early to come here, but autumn is longer with clearer skies and abundant gifts of nature.

 

In ancient times people used to predict the weather from the signs of nature: the behaviour of storks, swallows, and other birds, blossoms of flowers and trees, the creaking sounds of shutters or the echo sound of the church bell. Winter hardships were predicted from tree buds and the way animals were getting ready for winter. Rain predictions on the days of “seven sleeping brothers” were especially popular. Bathing in open air water reservoirs could begin only after briar started to blossom and if there was thunder after St Laurynas’ day, you were to expect some trouble.
